Get creative in the kitchen by revamping your units with paint

Need a new kitchen but only have a small budget? Sprucing up old timber units with a lick of paint is the answer. It’s simple to do and doesn’t cost a fortune. Follow these simple steps for an instant makeover.
Step 1
Using a screwdriver, remove all hinges and lie doors flat on a drop sheet in a well-ventilated area (note down where everything goes to make refixing easier).
Step 2
Thoroughly remove dirt and grease from surfaces with sugar soap. When clean and dry, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper. (If your units are made from laminate, see “Tip” below.)
Step 3
Remove all residual dust with cloth. Using brush or roller, apply one coat of water-based primer onto doors and leave to dry (allow about two hours). If primer looks thin or spotty, apply a second coat.
Step 4
Opt for an oil- or water-based paint in a colour of your choice, or mix-and-match colours. Allow first coat to dry, then apply a second. When completely dry, refix your cupboard doors. You could also update the handles and knobs to create a completely fresh, new look.
Tip
If your kitchen units are laminate, first remove surface dirt with laminate cleaner, then follow the steps above, using a laminate primer such as ESP (Easy Surface Prep) followed by a laminate paint to finish.
