Impress visitors to your home with this stunning, and easy to transform, table

hall table

You will need:

Your existing hall table or one in a shape you like (we bought ours from a second-hand store for $155)
Plastic drop sheet (newspaper or old bed sheet will also do)
Sandpaper (if required)
Undercoat (we used Dulux 1 step Oil Based Primer Sealer & Undercoat)
Small can or paint tray
Paintbrush
Mineral turpentine (about $4 a litre)
Drill and drill bits
Four castors (wheels that can be drilled into the legs of a table or chair), to match the size of your table legs.

Step 1

Check your table’s surface. If it needs preparation, put the table on the drop sheet and fix or lightly sand anything that’s uneven. Dust thoroughly. Remove the old handles, measure the holes and see if your new handles fit — if not, fill the old holes.

Step 2

Stir the undercoat, then pour only the amount you need into your can or paint tray. Remove any drawers and apply a single, even coat of undercoat to the front panel of each drawer. Next, paint undercoat on the rest of the table and leave it to dry.

Step 3

Rinse the paintbrush in turps and dry well. Stir the top coat, pour what you need into the tray or can and apply a coat to all surfaces using light, even strokes. Let dry then repeat with another coat.

Step 4

If you need to drill holes for the handles do this now (making sure the paint is dry). Screw the handles on. If the screws are too long inside the drawer, simply saw off the excess (but remove them first).

Step 5

Flip the table upside down, and using a drill that matches the width of the socket on your castors, drill into the middle of the base of each leg. Insert your castors.

Step 6

Flip back up and you’re done.
