Pine furniture looking a bit tired? No worries! Give it a quick makeover with a lick of paint.

If your pine bookshelves or chairs are looking tired, maybe it’s time for a DIY transformation. The easiest way to change the look? A good lick of paint.

Raw timber is the easiest base. Start with a primer undercoat; allow it to dry, then paint on an even coat of oil-based paint for a tough-as-nails finish. If your furniture looks glossy to start with, it’s probably finished with a clear polyurethane lacquer. You’ll have to sand off the first layer before you start.

You can also use water-based paint on pine — it’s easier to work with than oil paint but not as hard-wearing. Apply two coats and keep any leftover paint for touch-ups later on.

As for colour, we suggest painting large pieces of furniture in light, neutral tones — avoid colours that are really bright or heavy. From smaller pieces of furniture, such as chairs and stools, have some fun with accent colours such as pistachio, lemon, mint or red.
